My name is Lizzy Parry, and Chair for the Ministry of Magic committee. I am a Senior at John Jay High School and this is my third year participating in Model United Nations. As USG of Operations, it is my job to supervise and prepare the conference from both a staff and executive standpoint.  I am delighted to be the co-chair of this Specialized Committee because I am a huge fan of Harry Potter. Apart from Model UN, I am also involved in John Jay’s field hockey team. I love to listen to Childish Gambino, see my friends, get into heated debates about politics, and watch The Office. I am incredibly interested in anthropology, more specifically archaeology, and English. I hope you all have a great JJMUNC III. I look forward to meeting you all! If you have any questions, email me at eparry@klschools.org.

Chair: Will Palmieri

1936271_1723428157904267_7614102245132234024_nWelcome! On behalf of the Secretariat of JJMUNC III, it is my distinct pleasure to welcome you all to John Jay’s 3rd Model United Nations Conference! My name is Will Palmieri, and I am delighted to be your USG of Registration, as well as the co-Chair of our Specialized Committee, Council on the Ministry of Magic. As USG of Registration, my job is to facilitate a smooth registration process for all participating delegates. A little about me: I am a Senior at John Jay, and am in my second year of Model United Nations. Outside of MUN, I play trumpet in my school’s jazz band and run my school’s sustainability club (I’m always a stickler for being environmentally conscious). I have a passion for movies and TV–The Office is always a personal favorite, and The Dark Knight always brings out the superhero-loving kid inside me. In addition, I run for my school’s cross country team, I have an interest in creative writing (unbeknownst to most people), I am an author for my school’s blog, and my music taste ranges from Kendrick Lamar and Frank Ocean to Radiohead and Arcade Fire. As I begin to conclude my high school career, I hope to pursue a college major in a social science, such as political science or cultural anthropology. All in all, I can assure you with confidence that our third JJMUNC will be a day of stimulating debate, though-provoking discussion, and global perspective. Our team has worked countless hours to ensure that JJMUNC III will be a unique and fulfilling conference, and I cannot wait to see you all there. I wish you all the best of luck both at JJMUNC III and in your future MUN endeavors! If you have any questions regarding the committee, feel free to reach out to me at wpalmieri82@gmail.com.

MoM Background Guide

Topics:

Treatment of Muggles and Muggle Born:

Throughout time, Muggles have always been a target for wizards. From the “Magic is Might” Statue brought to The Ministry by Death Eaters, to the derogatory name itself, Wizards have always felt supercilious to those not possessing their powers. Under Voldemort’s control, the Ministry has appointed the new Muggle Born Registration Commission in order to humiliate and interrogate muggle-borns. The Muggle Born Registration Commission has been responsible for the imprisonment of countless innocent muggle-born witches and wizards. Legislation such as the Muggle Protection Act has been proposed in order to protect muggles from magical artefacts, however the prejudice against muggles and muggle-born has continued. As the Ministry of Magic we must decide if additional laws are necessary in order to maintain a peaceful coexistence between wizards and muggles.

Defense Against Death Eaters:

The most urgent threat in the wizarding world at this time is Voldemort and his followers, the Death Eaters. There have been countless attacks made by Death Eaters, marking the beginning of the Second Wizarding War. These dangerous witches and wizards have recklessly disobeyed wizarding law and constantly endanger, injure, or kill hundreds of innocent wizards. Death Eaters are increasingly growing stronger and they’re attacks are becoming progressively more damaging. As the Ministry of Magic, we must devise a plan in order to combat these Death Eaters and Voldemort and to make the wizarding world safe again.
